PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Hello Chapter 500!
The whole month of September has been very busy for some of the Chapter's members.
We held a POW/MIA Ceremony outside of our hall in the parking lot.  We attended different Stand Down events in Sacramento and at the Fair Grounds in Roseville.  The attendance for the Sacramento's Stand Down this Year was over 400 which included 24 women.  This was the first year for Placer County to hold a Stand Down and this event had approximately 170 homeless veterans including 4 women.
I have been receiving telephone calls from different members in our Chapter saying we have had long time members that have not attended our meetings, now are attending.
     Remember Veterans help Veterans!
                                              Charles Peterson, President

                                       JUST A REMINDER!
Don't forget, we are here to serve all Veterans.  We have clothing, some non-perishable food, toiletries, nachos and usually sandwich fixings and are always accepting donations for the same.
So, if you know of any Veterans or their families in need of any of the above, just send them to the Hall.  With this economy, there may be more Veterans in need than you realize or even some that you wouldn't expect to be in trouble and are.  And of course, winter is coming for the homeless.

                                                   UPDATES
We hope that all of you that have taken advantage of the free River Cats, Infineon and now Mountain Lion tickets have been enjoying all of the activities.  Oh!!! you say you didn't know anything about the free tickets?  If you have e-mail, possibly your address has changed and you might want to update it with us. If you don't have e-mail, you might call the office and let us know that you are interested in the tickets when they are available. Then we can let you know we have them.

VETERAN BENEFITS, NEWS

NEWS RELEASE - SEPTEMBER 6, 2011
DEPARTMENT OF VETERANS AFFAIRS-WASHINGTON

VA'S TELEPHONE SERVICE HELPS FAMILY MEMBERS ENCOURAGE VETERANS TO SEEK MEDICAL CARE

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has launched a telephone service, "Coaching into Care", to provide assistance to family members and friends trying to encourage their Veteran to seek health care for possible readjustment and mental health issues.
"Those closest to Veterans are often the first to recognize when Veterans are having difficulties," said Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric K. Shinseki.  "Family members and friends may not know what to say to encourage their Veterans to seek much needed readjustment and health care.  The Coaching into Care line will help them find the right words."
To help Veterans address problems and support Veterans in making decisions about getting care, the Coaching into Care program offers unlimited, free coaching with family members or friends over a series of telephone calls.  The priority is connecting Veterans with VA care in their community through the family member's help and encouragement.  Callers receive professional coaching on solving specific logistical obstacles and encouraging sometimes reluctant Veterans to seek care while still respecting the Veteran's right to make personal decisions.
Coaching into Care, launched in March 2011 has had more than 650 calls with family members or friends of greater than 175 Veterans to encourage them to seek care.  This phone line is connected to VA's Veterans Crisis Line, Caregiver Support Line, and the National Call Center for Homeless Veterans.  This way, if the caller or Veterans is in an immediate crisis, or has concerns regarding caregiving for a disabled Veteran, or seeking assistance regarding homelessness, there is no wrong number for families to call.
Callers can reach VA's Coaching into Care program at the toll-free number 1-888-823-7458, 8M-8PM, Mondays through
Fridays, and online at http://www.mirecc.va.gov/coaching/. As always Veterans can reach immediate help at the Veterans Crisis Line at 1-800--273-8255, press 1 for Veterans.

SIGNS YOUR VETERAN MAY NEED HELP

Veterans of recent combat operations may have difficulty transitioning from combat to home life.  They may be reluctant to seek help, or even unaware they need it.  He or she may have been changed by combat, and may not want to talk about it.  He or she may even feel their suffering is shameful or a sign of personal weakness.    Chapter note:  While the concentration nowadays is on the more recent Veterans, the older Veterans may also need help.  See page seven for some of the signs.

                          VETERAN LEGISLATION/NEWS

Former Assemblyman Richard E. "Dick" Floyd
February 3, 1931 - August 14, 2011

Assemblyman Floyd, ill for some time,  succumbed to complications due to diabetes.   A Korean War Veteran, Floyd was a rough and ready legislator, claimed to be brilliant by many of those who worked with and for him.
Best known to Vietnam Veterans for introducing the bill to build the CA Vietnam Veterans Memorial.   He not only introduced the bill,  but worked tirelessly to raise the funding to build the Memorial.
A Memorial Service was held for him on August 26, near the Memorial.  It was truly a celebration of his life with many stories told by those who knew him, worked with him and a nephew that spent summers with him.

ASSEMBLY BILL 905
Authored by Assemblymember Dr. Richard Pan

Dr. Pan is requesting your support for Assembly Bill 905.  This bill is in regard to the authorized agent for a servicemember's disposition of remains.  The Bill has been passed in the legislature and is awaiting Governor Brown's signature.  This is the request from Dr. Pan:  "With Californians serving in the military and deploying daily to conflict areas around the world, this critical piece of legislation will lend certainty to servicemembers and their families that in the event of their tragic passing in the line of duty, their final wishes will be honored......Specifically,  AB905 would add to the list of persons authorized to take control of a decedents remains the person authorized to direct disposition (PADD).  The bill would empower the PADD on the DD Form 93 as the legal agent who has the right and duty of disposition for the decedent.  It is my position that servicemembers should be able to name anyone they see fit to take control of their remains should death occur.
I urge you to join me in asking Governor Brown to sign this important piece of legislation immediately.  Please call Governor Brown's office at 916-445-2841 to express your support for AB 905.      Continued on Page seven

WHAT'S ON THE VVA500 CALENDAR?

    CHAPTER 500 ANNUAL GET-A-WAY
Friday, Saturday, Sunday
October 7, 8, 9

Family camping and sitting around a campfire

Get ready to relax, have some fun and get to know each other. This event is a three day camp-out.   The Annual Get-A-Way has become a tradition over the years with Chapter 500.  The format and location has changed over the years.  Here is some history from the past:
In 1990, Chapter members and their families braved some stiff breezes at Brannan Island State Park.  Lots of fishing, horse shoes, food and good conversation.
In 1993, the  campout was held at Lake Rawlins.  It was a family affair with Bill Wolf who has since passed away, providing a boat for fishing and fun rides for the kids.  There was plenty of food and even some left over that was given to charity.
In 1994, Strawberry Lodge was chosen for a "retreat" as opposed to a campout,  and time for members to get to know each other better.  All VVA members were invited and it was a kind of "come when you want affair".
In 1995, everyone was off to Santa Rosa and the Flamingo Resort Hotel.  It was billed as another chance to get to know your fellow members.  There was a sit-down dinner, and plenty of just relaxing conversation time.
In 1996, the Get-A-Way went back to the Strawberry Lodge.  It was another "come when you want affair".  Members spent time looking through scrapbooks of past Chapter activities after sit-down dinners.
We don't have records or at least that we can find quickly, past 1996.  But in 2000 the Get-A-Way was held at Scotts Flat Lake.  and every year afterward until now.  Since then, several members have passed away and are missed.  Some years, it was just for VVA members for the entire weekend, some included only VVA members for the camp-out, but family, AVVA, friends were invited up for the Saturday dinner.
But with members getting older, some not wanting to drive up to Scotts Flat, and several wishing for a warmer, closer spot, and just to try something new,  the Board decided to try out the Lake Solano Campground this year.
VP Ted Adams took a ride to check it out, took pictures, and says it looks like a great place.  The camp sites are near the Putah Creek, so fishing will be available without a boat. (More on licensing for fishing later in this article).  But the most important thing is the reason for a camp-out remains the same.  It is a time for members to get together and get to know each other in a relaxed easy going atmosphere with good food and good company. Details for the weekend in the next column.........

Covell Blvd. exit, go left at the light, keep going straight.  You will cross over 505, keep going about 4 Miles until you see a Gas Station  That is Pleasant Valley Rd.  Turn left go over Putah Creek, entrance to Campground is on the right.  Follow signs to camping.  Our sites are 50, 49, and 48.  You can also go to the website and check out some pictures/details:
www.co.solano.ca.us/depts/rm/countypark/lakesolano.asp.

So, you still have time to pack up your gear and get ready to have a great time.  Once you have attended a Get-A-Way, you will want to come back again.  Want to do some fishing?

Some information on licensing is on Page seven along with a list of basic items you should take when camping.

ASSEMBLY SPEAKER PEREZ ANNOUNCES
ADDITIONAL FUNDING FOR KEY VETERAN PROGRAMS

In September, Assembly speaker John A. Perez (D-Los Angeles) announced the allocation of $1.2 million of Assembly budget savings for several Veteran related programs.
"One of the highest obligations we have is to do right by the men and women who donned our nation's uniform," Perez said.  "The Assembly is committed to supporting our veterans and their families, and in keeping with that commitment, I have approved the use of some of the cuts I made to the Assembly's operating budget to support several veteran programs."  The allocations and programs are as follows and we thank the Speaker for the allocations.
1.  $130K for the California Veterans Service Representative Academy - Five week training program for prospective Veterans Service Representatives. VSOs help veterans file claims for service related injuries.
2.  $50k for Stand Downs.  Stand Downs are a resource providing services and resources to homeless veterans.
3.  $300k for Mental Health Counseling for National Guard Members and their families.
4.  $681k for California Conservation Corps - Veteran Back Country Trail Crews - training and hands-on work experience in areas with considerable potential for post-corps employment for returned veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan.

ARE YOUR MEDS CREATING NUTRITION DEFICIENCIES???

This will start a series on what depletions of nutrients are caused be certain medications.  Statin drugs are first.....Statin drugs like Lipitor and Zocor are excellent at lowering your cholesterol, but they also lower blood levels of Coenzyme Q10, especially when high does are used.  Coenzyme Q10 is a fat-soluble antioxidant found in most tissues of the body, and depletion of this compound by statin drugs may lead to muscle pain.  For some people taking Statins, Coenzyme Q10 supplements will help to reduce this pain.
From the Sac Bee, Drs. Kay Judge and Maxine Barish-Wreden.

                                 VVA500 SCHOLARSHIPS

Each year the chapter awards four scholarships to deserving students who fulfill the requirements of the chapter. Three of the scholarships are for $500. each and one is for $1,000. and has additional requirements. Some of the requirements are:  they must be a relative of a Vietnam Veteran, provide their grade point average and also provide a substantial paragraph or statement as to what their educational goals are.
The recipients of the awards are chosen by our scholarship committee and  we publish one winner's entry in each newsletter following the awards given out at the CA State Fair.  Following is the statement of Laura Chapman.  Her father was a Vietnam Veteran.
"Changes cause fear in many people.  Granted, I could be categorized in that group.  You never know when change may strike, although it is happening all around us at all times.  At least that is my experience.  Then one day, change becomes great enough that it hits you all at once and you find yourself at a crossroads in your life. You have the choice to wallow in self-pity or to find the silver-lining.  The latter was my choice.
My twenty year career helping people find employment and helping companies find employees didn't prepare me for being on the other side.  A slow-healing injury and a slow-moving economy caused my layoff and prompted the pursuit of my dream to become a Registered Nurse.  I had loved my old career because it meant I could help others in a personally  meaningful way.  A I look back though, the industry changed and the giving back became more about profits and pressure rather than helping others.  Deep down I knew this, but the paycheck and comfort of work I knew how to do (and was good at doing) kept my dreams sidelined.  Now, I have the rare opportunity, with the support of my family and friends, to pursue my dream.  Change is scary-and exciting, and I am embracing it.
People who know me describe me as a caring, generous and compassionate person.  Nursing will allow me to put my natural traits to good work and enable me to give to others in a meaningful way.  In particular, I am interested in hospice and geriatric care.  I know that I can make a significant contribution to those who are facing the end of their lives.  My goal is to help the terminally ill die with dignity and to help their families cope with their loss, in the best way possible.  With this in mind, at age forty-one, I am pursuing my Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree.  Since returning to college in the summer of 2009, I have had many exciting opportunities to learn, grow and challenge myself; throughout which I have maintained a 4.0 grade point average.  I am especially proud of my A grade in the Organic and Biochemistry 306 course I took.  I learned so much about chemistry, but more than that, I gained a new confidence in my academic abilities.  I was fortunate to build a relationship with my professor that went beyond merely learning chemistry.  She helped me see my strengths and weaknesses in a new light and taught me to believe in my abilities and myself in ways far beyond chemistry alone.  Continued in the next column........

SCHOLARSHIP ENTRY, CONTINUED

In addition, due to my status as an honor student I was invited and excitedly joined the Phi Kapa honor society on campus.
After completing my chemistry pre-requisite courses, I embarked on the biology pre-requisites for the Nursing program, with some fear, trepidation as well as new confidence gained from previous semesters.  In addition to other general education courses, I took Anatomy and Physiology 430 and 431 and Microbiology 440.  Again, I surprised myself by maintaining my overall 4.0 grade point average, as well as being one of the highest achievers that both my Anatomy and Physiology 430 and 431 professors have taught, to date.  Additionally, I applied to University of California, Davis and California State University, Sacramento, and was accepted as a transfer student to both campuses with junior status for fall 2011.
In January, I took the TEAS test, an entrance exam required for all potential Nursing students, my score ranked in the 99th percentile nationally. In February, I completed an additional application process for the impacted Bachelor of Science in Nursing program at California State University, Sacramento and was accepted for fall 2011. This was very exciting for me as only 80 students were accepted, out of 330 applicants: all based upon grade point average and TEAS test scores.
During this past year, I also managed some major academic transitions for my children.  My fifteen-year-old daughter, Sarah, started high school and my five-year-old daughter, Emma, began kindergarten. These transitions required my time volunteering in classroom activities for Emma as well as helping Sarah with the social and educational challenges that many of us faced entering high school.  Interestingly, I have found that my return to school has deepened my connection with my daughters.  As a student, I can directly relate to their struggles ad have the unique opportunity to help them achieve in school.  Plus by setting the example, I am teaching my daughters that any academic goal you set ca be fulfilled through dedication and perseverance.  It is not often that you get to study biology with your ninth grade daughter or show your five year old how atoms connect with molecular models in order to practice skills necessary to master organic chemistry.
Over the past two years, I have embraced many new changes in my academic and personal life.  I continue to embrace change with less fear and more openness, remembering that they are all steps in the journey to achieve my goal of graduating with the Bachelor of Science in Nursing.  I am so thankful and grateful to be on this educational journey due to the support of my family, friends, and external support groups, like the Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 500.
In closing, I realize I may not be in the typical demographic for this scholarship program; however, I appreciate your consideration as I have proven that I am a worthy candidate."

Congratulations Laura and best wishes for your
future success!
