The scholarships were awarded at the VVA500 booth at the CA State Fair in July, 2010.

 

NOTICE OF SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS FOR 2011

 

Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 500 will be awarding three scholarships in the amount of $500.00 each to graduates of high school and/or holders of a GED that will attend a college, university, or vocational school in 2011 or those already attending college or school.  Three scholarships will be awarded in honor of all of the fallen brothers and sisters lost in the Vietnam War.  An additional  scholarship will be awarded honoring Sarah Bonnifield, a benefactor of VVA500.  Please see the separate enclosure for the Bonnifield Scholarship details.  The Board of VVA500 has announced the criteria for receiving the $500. scholarships.  The Scholarship Committee will select the recipients based on the merits of  grade point average, educational goals and compliance with the following requirements set by the Chapter:

1.  MUST be a dependent or relative as such of a Vietnam Era Veteran (Jan 1, 1959-May 7, 1975).  The relative may be a spouse, son, daughter, grandson, granddaughter, nephew or niece.  A Vietnam Veteran may also apply for the scholarship. 

2.  MUST provide a copy of the Veteran’s DD214 or submit proof of military service (if a DD214 is not available other proof of service must be provided) Contact VVA500 for details.

3.  MUST submit a copy of their paid registration to an accredited school, college, or university.

4.  MUST complete a substantial paragraph on the student’s educational goals and enclose a copy of the last grade point average from the last school attended.  Include  a cover page listing the following information:  name, address, phone, e-mail if available, name and address of school last attended.

5.  MUST submit entries by June 1, 2011, or MUST be postmarked by 12AM, June 1 , 2011.

6.  Previous recipients of VVA500 scholarships are eligible to apply again. 

Recipients of the scholarships will be notified by June 30, 2011.  Scholarships will be awarded at the CA State Fair Armed Forces/First Responders Day, in July or August 2011 per notification.

Sarah A. Bonnifield Vietnam Veterans Scholarship Fund

Sarah Bonnifield chose that the majority of her estate be left for the benefit of several veteran organizations and other nonprofit organizations including the Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 500. The Sarah A. Bonnifield Vietnam Veterans Scholarship Fund was established by the Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 500 to honor Sarah Bonnifield in perpetuity by providing financial support in the form of a scholarship each year to a Vietnam Veteran or a dependent or relative of a Vietnam Veteran.

Purpose and Amount

The scholarship amount will vary, but will be at least $1,000. Previous scholarship recipients may reapply. Award recipients may use funds to pay for tuition and institutional fees. In order to receive funds, a recipient must submit evidence of full-time enrollment at an accredited educational institution.

Eligibility

To be eligible, an applicant must:

Be a Vietnam Veteran or a dependent or relative of a Vietnam Veteran (relative may be a spouse, son, daughter, grandson, granddaughter, nephew or niece)

Provide a copy of the Veteran’s DD214 or submit proof of military service

Be enrolled in at least 12 academic units per quarter/semester during the year of the scholarship award

Selection

The selection committee will review applications from all eligible candidates. Scholarship recipients will be selected based upon how well they meet the scholarship criteria.

Award

The scholarship will be issued over the course of one academic year. Continuous, full-time enrollment (no fewer than 12 units per quarter/semester) is a requirement. The Sacramento Region Community Foundation will disburse the award directly to the school on behalf of the recipient.

How to Apply

Submit a complete application package by the specified due date. Use the following application package checklist to make sure your application package is complete:

A completed application form

An essay of 500 words or fewer on the following topic: "Report on the Tonkin Gulf incident, and how it escalated United States involvement in Vietnam"

Official transcripts, in a sealed envelope

A list of your extracurricular or community activities

Two letters of recommendation from individuals who are not related to the applicant
