PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

As we close out another year for the chapter, we are looking forward to a new year of progress and growth for VVA500.  This year will be especially exciting with the opening of our new office and outreach center.  Expanding our services to all Veterans has been a long term goal and now we will actually be able to see that goal reached.  Now the real work begins with the step by step process of providing as many resources for Veterans as possible.  Hope to see you at the Grand Opening.  And don't forget to come and pay your respects to our fallen Vietnam brothers and sisters at the Memorial in the morning.  We'll be participating in the St. Patrick's Day parade on March 17.  The chapter is always warmly welcomed by the public in that parade, so if you haven't ever been "Welcomed Home", this parade will warm your heart.  Come join us on March 17.
                                                  Your President, Ted Adams

                                    BRIEF NEWSLETTER
This month's newsletter will be a very short version of the norm due to preparations for the new office and many other activities requiring lots of time.   We'll be back to the normal format for the next issue in April.

NEW OFFICE AND STAFFING - HELP WANTED
We haven't established the official office hours of the new office yet.  This will depend on staffing of the office and the need of more than one person to be there during those open hours.  If you have a few hours a day or week to volunteer your time to help, please give the office a call.  Also for any organizations or agencies that would like to expand their services in another area besides their own offices, we welcome your participation.  We will be setting up a schedule for who will be there, when, and what services can be offered during what days and times.  Members, we are also looking to have Service Officers available at all times, to be able to process compensation claims and check on claims.  If any VVA members are interested in training to be VSO's, please call the office.

With the help of some very special individuals, VVA500 is proud to announce the achievement of one of our long term goals, the opening of a Veteran Outreach and Drop-In Center.  Our goals will now be to ultimately serve ALL Veterans in securing compensation claims, employment, referring to appropriate agencies per the individual Veteran’s needs, assist the homeless Veterans, referrals for housing, secure benefits and services for the disabled, hold educational seminars for Veterans and their families, and to  provide a congenial atmosphere for all Veterans to interact with each other.

The Veterans of our community have served this country well.  The least we can do is to serve them in return.  We invite all agencies and organizations who wish to participate in this endeavor, to expand their services for Veterans by joining us in making our home the “Base Camp for Vets”, a one stop center for Veterans services.

ABOUT “WELCOME HOME VIETNAM VETERANS DAY”

House Resolution 169 and Senate Resolution 289 were unanimously passed to make March 30, the official “Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day”.  President Bush has yet to make the proclamation.

Vietnam Veterans served their country with honor and pride.  Yet, very few were welcomed home and in fact, many were greeted with derision for their service and many were rejected by the public.  Along with that, they had to fight, and to this day must continue to have to fight for benefits that they truly deserve due to their service.  Many Vietnam Veterans are dying at an unusually young age and many are still suffering due to service related injuries and disabilities.  Don’t you think that these Veterans and their families deserve an official acknowledgement from their government?

Our membership has urged President Bush to sign the resolutions and proclaim March 30, 2008, “WELCOME HOME VIETNAM VETERANS DAY”.  The nation is welcoming home our current Iraqi/Afghanistan Veterans.  Our Vietnam Veterans deserve nothing less.

We invite all to attend the activities of the special day for all Vietnam Veterans, their families, friends and Chapter 500.  Join us for the “Welcome Home Ceremony” in the morning and then join us for the Grand Opening of our new office and outreach center at noon.  We look forward to all celebrating with us.
