PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

This Memorial Day weekend was the most harried and moving in years for me.  Our involvement at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial of the "Reading of the Names",  is always personally moving, as well as the Memorial Day Parade (Great Float).  We also attended the ceremonies at both the City Cemetery and the Mexican-American Veterans Memorial.  And, you bet, I found some time to stop by the "Bunker" (Torch Club) to see my brothers.  Toasts, hugs and love was shared by all.
But one of the honors I had was to place flags on the graves of fallen Veterans.  As I did so, I thought...although I have my lovely wife, a sister, and many nephews and nieces,  I have no children of my own, and the chance that someday I will be forgotten was near.  But no, just as long as there are living Veterans,  I or my brother and sister Veterans, they will never forget those whom went before them.  If you did not have a chance to be involved with something this last Memorial Day, there is always next year.  You don't know what an honor you are missing.
                        Your President, Gregory McNeill

NOTE FROM THE EDITOR

May was a particular busy month with all of the Veteran and  Memorial Day weekend activities taking place.  Due to Chapter 500's active involvement in many of the events, yes, your newsletter is coming out much later than usual.  While we say many of you at the various events, many were also among the missing.  So, this newsletter will divert  from the norm and will be mainly an "After Action" report on all of the activities so you can all share in Chapter 500's involvement.

FREEDOM FLIGHT FOR WWII VETERANS

As of this writing, we do not have the final details on the Freedom Flight yet.  KFBK is spearheading a trip for WWII Veterans to Washington D.C. to see the WWII Memorial.  See the back page for what we know so far..............

May 31st, The Memorial Day Parade

VVA500 was an active participant in the planning and organizing the Memorial Day Parade, hosted by the Veterans Affiliated Council.  The parade was held in downtown Sacramento, circling the Capital. The Review Stand held many Veteran organization, government and community leaders.  We were honored to have the Adjutant General of the CA National Guard, MG Thomas W. Eres as the State Master of Ceremonies and Sacramento Mayor Heather Fargo as the City Grand Marshall.  Major sponsors of the parade were the City of Sacramento, and City Councilman Dave Jones, who is a consistent supporter of Veterans.  VVA500 put together a terrific float, and were awarded a 2nd place trophy in the Veteran category for their efforts.  Diana Titus and Dave Bender from KOVR rode on the float and created a VVA500 song, which all had fun singing along the route.  The float enabled those unable to walk the parade route join in the parade.  We were pleased to have Dick Southern, then President of the California State Council and his wife Carol join with the Chapter in the Parade.

MORE ACTIVITY......

Throughout the days before the Memorial Day weekend, our office received several calls from the media.  The result of which, in addition to the normal publication of our events, two in depth articles were published regarding our members, William R.I. "Easy" Smith and Jesse Garcia.  This has resulted in the office receiving even more calls from Veterans for help and other organizations needing information or making requests.
Due to some networking, for the parade we were able to obtain excellent Master of Ceremonies services from Mark Williams from KFBK.  KFBK became an excellent sponsor for the parade, made frequent announcements for us and our E.D. was able to speak on the Mark Williams Radio Show a few times promoting both the "Reading" and the Parade.
As always, VVA500 continues to work with other Veterans organizations to achieve benefits for and resolve the problems of Veterans.

UPDATE ON THE VIETNAM VETERANS MEMORIAL

MOST RECENT DEVELOPMENTS.....News from CDVA, as we understand the paperwork is now being readied to solicit for bids for the repair of the Memorial.  Of course with the "Reading", the public had plenty of opportunity to see the damage done and express their concern for the lack of repair.  Our Memorial Guard, Ken Nelson, was interviewed by one of the local TV stations, and was able to express his opinion regarding both the vandalism performed to the Memorial, which he has attempted to protect for all of these years and frustration over the slow process of getting the repairs scheduled and completed.
