CURRENT NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS
GENERAL MEETING
January 20, 2004

This will be an important meeting for members to attend.  We want the input of all for planning the next year, and to see what activities members are interested in participating in.  Also, we will be distributing some important information regarding Agent Orange and other toxins that can affect you.  This information can be extremely helpful to you in filing claims for benefits due to service related health issues.  You will learn from this information, that it is not only Agent Orange per se that can cause health problems, but several other toxic chemicals.  The information describes the chemical as well as the symptoms and the illnesses they can create.  Many veterans have indicated that when they go to file a claim, they have been told they were not eligible, that Agent Orange did not cause the specific problem.  This may be true, but it is very possible that something else did.  So come to the meeting and pick up your package.  Even if you do not feel a need for it now, you don't know what the future holds for you.

NEWS FROM THE VA

FOR VETERANS ALREADY RATED WITH A SERVICE CONNECTED DISABILITY.......

Excerpts from a Recent VA News Release...."Disabled Veterans Get Health Care Priority from VA" - Issued January 2, 2004

All veterans with service-connected medical problems will receive priority access to health care from the Department of Veterans Affairs under a new directive.
The new directive provides that all veterans requiring care for a service-connected disability - regardless of the extent of their injury - must be scheduled for a primary care evaluation within 30 days of their request for care.  If a VA facility is unable to schedule an appointment within 30 days, it must arrange for care at another VA facility, at a contract facility or through a sharing agreement.
The directive covers hospitalization and outpatient care.  It does not apply to care for medical problems not related to a service-connected disability.  However, veterans needing emergency care will be treated immediately.
The new provision is an extension of rules that took effect in October 2002 for severely disabled veterans.  Under the earlier rule, priority access to health care went to veterans with disabilities rated at 50 percent or more.  For the severely disabled, the priority includes care for non-service-connected medical problems.

     IN MEMORY OF

GREGORY DEAN BOYSOL

September 15, 1948
December 17, 2003

Greg Boysol was a member of VVA Chapter 535 located in Nevada County.  VVA500 knew him better because he also served as the Treasurer of the  VVA California State Council.

Greg was a native of California, graduated from CSU in Chico and owned his own CPA firm.  He was involved in many community activities as well as being active in many of his Chapter's activities.

Gregory and Mary Lou McNeill attended the services held in the Marysville area on January 10.  Several members of the CSC board and other chapters were also in attendance.  Chapter 535 performed the honor guard duties at the service.
